Members: Edward “Sonny” BivinsKenneth “Wally” Kelly, Richard Taylor, Winfred “Blue” Lovett, Gerald Alston, George “Smitty” Smith, Alvin Pazant, Edward Bivens, Charles “Charming Charles” Hardy.

The Manhattans are one of the best R&B groups of all time. The group blessed us with some of the most quality quiet storm jams of the 70s & early 80s.

Originating in Jersey City, New Jersey, the group became one of the memorable groups in the world of Philly Soul. They are beyond deserving of their flowers.

The Manhattans’ music has been covered and sampled by some of the most amazing musicians ever. From Whitney Houston to Jazmine Sullivan, the gems are just there.

The 60s:

Albums Released: Dedicated to You, For You and Yours.

The group signed with Carnival Records, & became one of their biggest successes with R&B hits “I Wanna Be (Your Everything,)” “Baby I Need You,” “For the Very First Time” & many others.

The 70s:

Albums Released: With These Hands, A Million to One, There’s No Me Without You, That’s How Much I Love You, The Manhattans, It Feels So Good, There’s No Good in Goodbye, Love Talk.

Tragedy fell upon the group in late 1970 when lead singer George “Smitty” Smith became ill and later passed away that December. Gerald Alston took over the lead spot.

The group’s commercially successful era began with the amazing “There’s No Me Without You.”

The group’s biggest success came with their self titled album in 1976. The group’s hit number one single “Kiss and Say Goodbye” was a worldwide success.

The group continued to have hits throughout the 70s.

The 80s:

Albums Released: After Midnight, Black Tie, Forever by Your Side, Too Hot to Stop It, Back To Basics, Sweet Talk.

The group’s 11th studio album gave us one of the best quiet storm jams of all time! The platinum selling “Shining Star!” SHINING STAR IS TIMELESS OKAY!

They continued to give quality hits in the 80s, but soulful bands were at a crossroad during this time period with the popularization of industrial sounds incorporated in R&B music.

The 90s:

Albums Released: N/A

The Manhattans didn’t release any music in the 90s, and witnessed my changes within the group.

The 00s:

Albums Released: Reachin’ for the Sky, Men Cry Too.

The group reunited in the 2000s, & dropped MUSIC okay! We love to see longevity.

The Manhattans reign supreme for being one of the best balladeers to grace R&B music! The kings! -MJ
