#BETAwards ’16

After Madonna’s not so well received performance of Purple Rain at the BBMA’s, BET sent out a shady tweet saying “we got you,” in hopes of giving us a phenomenal tribute to our rock legend, Prince. I must say I am impressed by yesterday’s award show.

The show opened with a surprise performance from Beyoncé & Kendrick Lamar, performing their powerful pro-black song, Freedom. Giving those who were there an awesome treat of what is at her successful Formation World Tour, Bey had to leave right after her performance to prep for her concert in England.

Anthony Anderson & Tracee Ellis Ross were the hosts again this year, & did amazingly well.

I think the best moments of the night came from tributes to Prince. Among those who paid tribute to our late star were Erykah Badu, Tori Kelly, Stevie Wonder, the Roots & Erykah Badu, Bilal, maxwell, Jennifer Hudson & Sheila E. All of the tributes were phenomenal, but I was blown away by Bilal, J Hud, Janelle Monáe & Sheila E. Bilal covered “The Beautiful Ones” in a Prince matter. 😍 Jennifer gave us an emotional rendition of Purple Rain…Janellw showed us that her mentor taught her well..& Sheila E just had damn time. 🙌🏾😩

I can go on & on about how great the awards show was, but let’s discuss Jessie Williams Speech. With winning this year’s humanitarian award, Jesse was worthy of the award with his  Contributions to social justice. He PREACHED on this network that is owned by white people, and told them things like this 👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾

“If you have no interest in equal rights for black people, then do not make suggestions to those who do. Sit down.”

I’ll save my real feelings about his speech for a different post, but just know everything Jessie said, is the TRUTH.

Overall, it was a great awards show. Great performances from Chloe & Halle, French Montana, Fat Joe & Remy Ma as well! Check it out on BET since they’ll be showing it faithfully until Christmas! 😃
