When speaking of R&B vocalists, Jesse Powell has to be at the top of the list. Discovered by Louil Silas Jr, Jesse won his way into our hearts with his remarkable voice, four octave range and timeless tunes. He deserves his flowers for that alone.
The 90s:
Albums Released: Jesse Powell & ‘Bout It.
Born and raised in Gary, Indiana, Jesse was eventually signed Silas’ imprint of MCA Records. His self-titled album was released on March 12, 1996. He received moderate success with “All I Need” & his remake of Enchantment’s “Gloria.”
Jesse released his follow up album not too long after, titled ‘Bout It. It was successful due to his wonderful record “You.”
“You” became the biggest hit of his career and is one of his most signature song. It is the most memorable song of the 90s, and will be played at my wedding reception. It was a top 3 hit on the R&B charts and top 10 on the pop charts. Yes for classic and REAL R&B.
The 00s:
Albums Released: JP, & Jesse.
Jesse’s JP album is one of my favorite albums of the 2000s. It showcases his vocal capabilities and amazing production. It is the haunting remake of the One Way/Al Hudson’s “Something In The Past” that does it for me. It’s something that Jesse possess that making a song his own..is just so magical. This song has made me cry on numerous occasions, and not many artists can move me in that way. 😩😭😭😭
Jesse’s most recent album to date “Jesse” serves as his last release before his retirement from the music industry. His cover of Michael Jackson’s “I Can’t Help It” is just…wow man. Why was Jesse the truth!!?
Jesse will go down as one of the most beloved balladeers of the 1990s/early 2000s. His gift and talents will always be appreciated by true music lovers. -MJ
