Stephanie Dorthea Mills is a LEGEND! The Grammy award winning singer, songwriter & actress has blessed audiences with her remarkable voice over the past 40+ years.
Recently, Stephanie talked about the state of R&B in her interview with the sister circle. Check out what she says.
You’re back? Okay good. What Stephanie said about them wanting R&B, but not from US…is accurate. This is why I Make appreciation posts for legendary R&B artists.
I want our people to know about the legends who paved the way for so many of our artists today, & Stephanie is one of them. She’s a R&B QUEEN WITH ACCOLADES FOR DAYS!
I know if you’re reading this, you’re ready to go down memory lane..so let’s go!
Teddy Pendergrass & Stephanie collaborated twice with Two Hearts
BUT their cover of Peabo Bryson’s Feel The Fire is life y’all. FEEL THE FIRE WITH THOSE TWO? They did that song justice and then some.
& When she sang Feel The Fire With Christopher Williams in 1990? LISTENNNNN!
We love R&B legends who have a bond! My favorite live performance for I Have Learned To Respect The Power Of Love is when Stephanie brought Angela Winbush & Cherrelle on stage. Angela wrote that song and others for Stephanie. SISTERHOOD!
Stephanie is a huge Gladys Knight fan, & when she covered If I Were Your Woman for her 1987 album (with the same title,) she tore that song UP. Her 1988 performance on soul train for that song is phenomenal. Whew.
The 1970s:
Albums released: Movin’ In The Right Direction, For The First Time, What Cha Gonna Do with My Lovin’.
The 1970s were a breakthrough decade for Stephanie. After slaying amateur night at the Apollo theater at a young age, Stephanie became an opening act for The Isley Brothers!
She first signed with Paramount Records at 15, & released this first single.
Stephanie rose to stardom starring in the Original Broadway run of The Wiz as Dorothy.
Stephanie is A QUEEN! this is talent, girls.
After being signed to Paramount & Motown, Stephanie released her first two albums. My favorite is Motown’s For The First Time. Written and produced by Burt Bacharach & Hal David..this was an album with quality songs.
When Stephanie signed to 20th Century Fox, she became a FORCE on the R&B & oop charts! For example: 1979’s What Cha’ Gonna Do With My Lovin.
One of my favorite Stephanie songs, What Cha’ Gonna Do With My Lovin is just that girl! & it was produced by James Mtume & Reggie Lucas! Legendary bop!

The 80s was a perfect decade for Stephanie. She released hit after hit. Literally! Never Knew Love Like This Before was a bonafide hit for her, & is one of her signature hits!
Stephanie will go on to release classics like her cover of Prince’s How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore, I Feel Good All Over, I Have Learned To Respect The Power Of Love, & countless other hits.
1985’s Stand Back is a soulful pop bop! & her vocals on this song is sickening child!

1987’s Jesse? Flames.
Here’s some more of Stephanie’s memorable hits from the 80s.
The 1990s:

The 90s decade was a good one for Stephanie, when you think about the success of her Home album, the birth of her son & her subsequent albums.
Something Real has HITS OKAY?!
Her gospel album was something wonderful as well. The Angela Winbush penned Power Of God? WHEW! It’s an inspirational song with R&B influences in regards to production. I love it. Every song is incredible.
The 2000s:
Albums released: Born For This.
In the late 90s-early 2000s, Stephanie wasn’t in the spotlight so much because she wanted to focus on raising her amazing son. But in 2004, she released her first album in over a decade. Born For This is an album okay! Flawless vocals like always.
The 2010s:
Albums released: N/A
These days, Stephanie tours around the world..performing the hits that made her a household name. She recorded a song dedicated to her good friend, the legendary Michael Jackson in 2010..not too long after his untimely death.
