“We makes it hot like Coko, Lelee & Taj, OH MY GOD!”
SWV (Sisters With Voices) are among the greats in the music industry. These singing sisters have blessed us for 25 years with amazing music, & those anointed vocals. Everything about them was iconic in their early days.
Coko’s long nails, their hip hop swag..just perfection to be completely honest. Speaking that it is their 25th anniversary of being in the music industry, why not show them appreciation for their contributions to music?
It’s About Time (1992):
Favorites: Anything, I’m So Into You, Weak, You’re Always On My Mind, Downtown, It’s About Time, Think You’re Gonna Like It, That’s What I Need
SWV’s debut album ages like wine. There’s something about It’s About Time that is so intriguing. From Coko’s talented vocals singing lead, to their angelic harmonies..to the perfection that is Brain Morgan’s production and songwriting..it makes this album timeless.
I just LOOOOOOVE their remix for Anything, which was used for the Above The Rim soundtrack! The version w/ the wu tang clan? ICONIC!
New Beginning (1996):
New Beginning has to be my favorite SWV album, because the ballads are just tantalizing. The hip hop swag on “On & On” is so mesmerizing & addictive to listen to. Use Your Heart? A lyrical masterpiece Just a great album overall!
Release Some Tension (1997):
Favorites: Someone, Lose My Cool, Can We, Rain, Give It Up, When U Cry, Here For You
On their unsung episode, they discussed how this album was basically the album where their label made them work with who’s currently hot in the rap world, but it has some of their best work on it. First of all RAIN? PERFREAKINGFECTION.
Brian Morgan deserved a Grammy for his production on this quiet storm bop. When U Cry samples blues legend Tyrone Davis’ hit single In The Mood, & Coko takes it on home with her stellar vocals. It’s easily one of my favorites. 👏🏾 It is SWV’s last album for over 10 years, & it just so good and was sad that they ended the way they did.
Their first album in 15 years, I Missed Us is a great comeback album. It definitely introduced me to SWV outside of their huge hits…& made me dig deeper into their album cuts. They showed the world that they still have those harmonies on fleek, & that they really missed being in that booth together!
Their most recent album to date, SWV released the most slept on album in 2016. The hashtag ballad MCE, & the R&B love song Ain’t No Man are the most memorable songs on this record. You can’t forget about When Love Didn’t Hurt, which begins with a ragtime like sample that Scott Joplin could’ve composed himself. Still is reminding everyone that SWV isn’t going anywhere.
SWV deserves to be discussed among the greats because their discography is beyond legendary. Even their recent work is quality work. When it’s real and authentic, it will never die. SWV has a sisterhood & a bond through music that will never be broken..& I hope not because I can go another 25 years listening to them making great R&B jams. 💐
